Say It With Flowers

An impeccably dressed man in his 30’s, reminiscent of a Wall Street broker, brought his elderly cat in to be euthanized. We had not met so I introduced myself and asked a little about his cat. He was somber but not unduly upset and shyly asked if I would mind if he put on music for his cat in her final moments. Naturally I agreed, and he produced a small tape player from a bag and played classical music. I proceeded with the euthanasia, spoke with the owner briefly and left him alone with his cat and music. After a few minutes he left and when we went into the room, he had left a single rose lying on top of his cat. In translating emotion into action, he was able to find a unique and heartfelt way to say good-bye to his pet.
